Skin Checks
Australia has one of the highest rates of melanoma and skin cancer worldwide, largely due to its intense UV radiation levels and predominantly fair-skinned population. While skin cancer becomes increasingly common with age, it can affect people of all ages, from young adults to the elderly, making regular skin checks essential for everyone.
Use this helpful checklist to identify potential signs of skin cancer:
- Asymmetry – One half looks different from the other
- Border irregularity – Uneven, jagged, or blurred edges
- Colour variation – Multiple colours or changes in colour over time
- Different – Stands out from your other moles or freckles
- Evolving/Elevated – Changes in size, shape, texture, or height
- Firm to touch – Feels solid or hard when pressed
- Growing – Increasing in size
Be alert for:
- Sores that don’t heal within 2-3 weeks
- Spots that bleed, itch, or feel tender
- New growths or changes to existing moles
- Patches of skin that feel rough or scaly
